SCAN Investigators
Phil Nader, MD - Dr. Nader is a Pediatrician and the Principal Investigator of the SCAN study. Dr Nader went to medical School in Rochester, New York, and moved to San Diego from Texas in 1983. The first of the SCAN studies began in 1985. In addition to his work on research with children and families, Dr Nader enjoys his grandchildren, traveling, and singing.
Michelle Murphy Zive - Michelle is the Director of the SCAN project. After receiving her Master's in Nutrition and Food Sciences and becoming a Registered Dietitian, she recruited for the SCAN project when the kids were in preschool. She also works on other community projects in Community Pediatrics. She enjoys writing, reading, surfing and spending time with her two beautiful girls, Molly (11 years) and Kelly (8 years).
Charles C. Berry Ph.D - Dr. Berry is the consulting Statistician on SCAN. He has been at UCSD for almost 30 years. He is an adjunct professor atCommunityh and Family Medicine.
Jessi Brennan, M.A. - Jesse is the Division Statistician at Community Pediatrics. He assists with data management and provides statistical analysis for manuscripts. He is a native San Diegan who received his MA in Experimental Psychology from Humboldt State University. In addition to SCAN, he is responsible for statistical consulting and analysis for several other Community Pediatrics projects.
Shelia L. Broyles, Ph.D, M.P.H. - Dr. Broyles is an Associate Project Scientist at U.C.S.D. She has a Doctorate in Experimental Psychology, and a Master in Public Health, concentrating in Epidemiology. Dr. Broyles began working with SCAN in January 1989, during the first year of measurement. She has been responsible for making sure that correct procedures are used in the study, and that the data are handled well. She also writes manuscripts which describe the interesting things that SCAN has taught us about behaviors and health. When she is not working, she loves the beach, boogie boarding, hiking, attending horse shows, and roller blading (which for her is a "developing skill"). She also likes hanging-out with her family, especially her nieces and nephews.
John Elder, Ph.D. - Dr. Elder has a Ph.D. in Psychology and an MPH in Health Systems. He is Adjunct Professor of Pediatrics at UCSD and Professor of Public Health at San Diego State University. Dr. Elder has been a SCAN Investigator since the early stages of the project. He specializes in helping us understand how our beliefs and behaviors impact our health. He stays in shape by running and coaching his daughter's soccer team; and he enjoys traveling to other interesting countries with his wife and two children.
Thom Mckenzie - Thom McKenzie has been involved in the physical activity portion of SCAN since the beginning. He is a former public school teacher, coach, and administrator. He received his Ph.D. from Ohio State University, and has been a professor of Exercise and Nutritional Sciences at SDSU since 1980. In addition to SCAN, he participates in several other Community Pediatrics projects.
James Sallis, Ph.D. - Dr. Sallis is a Professor of Psychology at San Diego State University. He has been with SCAN since the beginning and continues to consult on the project. Dr. Sallis is an active researcher on physical activity and nutrition, especially with young people. His main physical activities are jogging and cycling, and his hobbies are playing rock'n'roll and taking photos.
Howard Taras, MD - Dr. Taras is a community pediatrician at UCSD. He has a special interest in the effects of television viewing and video game playing on children's weight, physical activity level and general health as well as on educational achievement. Dr. Taras's involvement in the SCAN project is related to these potential influences.
