Community-Based Pediatric Residency Training

Pediatric Residents participate in a month-long rotation that gives them an opportunity to assess children in the context of family, school, culture, economic resources, and community. This experience is designed to motivate more Pediatricians to be active in the communities in which they will practice, and to provide services to populations that are medically underserved. They will be exposed to role models who are: 1) consultants to school systems and community agencies; and, 2) advocates for change to improve children's health. Nurse Practitioners are among the role models who will assist Residents in accessing community resources, linking with school staff health care providers, and designing care plans for children in ways not customary for primary care physicians in clinical settings. Six additional residents participate as consultants to inner-city schools and day care centers on a bi-weekly basis over the year, which fulfills a continuity clinic subspecialty rotation in school health.
