Families that participated in this study had:

  • An unmarried, Latina teenager who was between 15 to 18 years of age.
  • She was pregnant for the first time and no one in her household had had a teen pregnancy or birth (no sisters have had a baby as a teenager).
  • There were younger brothers or sisters ages 12 to 17.
  • The teenager, her younger siblings and their mothers agreed to participate.

Those who participated received $55 in gift cards and free gifts at each home vist.

The families that participated filled out an interview and a questionnaire in their homes at a time convenient for them at the four different time points. A typical question on the questionnaire asks: "How do you think your relationship with your parents will change once you have your baby?" (asked prenatally), and "How has your relationship with your parents changed since you had your baby?" (asked when the teenager's baby was 6 weeks old, 6 months old, and 1 year old).
