CHILD PROTECTION ROTATION

Background:

Since 1994, the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and the Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD) have offered joint training in community pediatrics. One goal of the training has always focused on the prevention, recognition, and intervention of child abuse and neglect. In the fall of 2000 a separate two week rotation addressing family violence issues was created. As with other community pediatrics activities, the rotation is experiential in nature. All pediatric residents at UCSD and all pediatric residents at NMCSD participate in this required rotation during their first year of residency.

Objectives:

The objectives for the rotation are to train pediatrics residents:

    1. to increase awareness, understanding, and sensitivity regarding issues of family violence
    2. to recognize, evaluate and intervene in family violence
    3. to incorporate violence prevention strategies into their practice
