Clearview Elementary School/UCSD Pediatrics Partnerships
The Clear View Project is a collaborative health education project between UCSD Community Pediatrics, Clear View Charter School, and Cox Communications, Inc. The goal of this project is to teach students in Mrs. Linda Marion's sixth grade class about nutrition, how physical activity helps balance caloric intake, and how decisions about nutrition and physical activity can positively or negatively affect cardiovascular health. The interactive health education lessons are conducted via a fiber optic link running directly from a small conference room on the Pediatric floor of the UCSD Medical Center to the sixth grade classroom where Mrs. Marion teaches.
In the three year span of the project, sixth grade students have had opportunities to design heart healthy restaurant menus, participate in CATCH Physical Education, be featured on a COX promotional tape exercising with celebrity fitness personality Tammy Lee Webb, and persuaded the Chula Vista Child Nutrition Services Department to replace the previously served high fat pizza with low fat pizza through convincing research conducted at their school.
During the 1999-2000 school year, the Clear View Project has offered sixth graders an interactive curriculum that provides opportunities in understanding nutrition's role in cardiovascular health. This curriculum has included the development of a web page, community field trips, and link-based instruction.
