Q: What is SD-KHAN's mission?
A: The mission of SD-KHAN is to assure that San Diego County's children have access to medical and dental insurance. SD-KHAN is also committed to increasing the appropriate utilization of health and dental services, including preventive services. We focus on low- and middle-income families.
Q: Is SD-KHAN different from Healthy Families?
A: Yes, very different. Healthy Families is "health insurance" for families. Health insurance means that if a child gets sick, or injured or if your child sees a doctor for a check-up and immunizations, almost all of the medical and dental costs are paid for by the insurance company.
SD-KHAN is not an insurance program. SD-KHAN helps parents apply for health insurance programs. And Health Families is simply one of the many types of insurance applications we help parents with.
Q: What health coverage options does SD-KHAN refer to?
A: SD-KHAN can link uninsured families and youth to the following medical care options: Medi-Cal, Expanded Medi-Cal, Healthy Families, Kaiser Permanente Child Health Plan, Access for Infants and Mothers, and California Children's Services.
Q: What is the cost for SD-KHAN's services?
A: There is no charge to the caller for this referral and information service. Anyone inquiring about health insurance for children and their families can call SD-KHAN.
Q: What are the costs for the health insurance programs?
A: The cost of health insurance options range from $0 to $15 per child per month. The exact amount dependson (a) your family size, (b) income, and (c) other qualifications, that we will explain.
Q: What else will make a family eligible for health insurance at a low cost (or no cost)?
A: Each health insurance package has specific income requirements. Call SD-KHAN and let the resource specialist determine which insurance program is the best fit. Your family members may be eligible if they are:
- Between agesages 0 through 18 years old
- California residents
- U.S. citizens or qualified legal immigrant status. Onlysome programs require you to havel legal immigrant status or be a U.S. citizen.
Q. What "income" would make a family eligible for one of these no-cost or low-const health insurance plans?
A. SD-KHAN has insurance options for families who have earn very little money and for families whose income is much higher (up to 3 times the federal poverty level income.) For example, if everyone in your home combines all the money earned per year, and it is not higher than $ 58,050, then your children are likely eligible for a low-cost insurance program as long as you have four or more family members.
Q: What can a client expect during a telephone call with SD-KHAN?
A: When a client calls SD-KHAN, they will be asked a few questions such as their family size, gross monthly income, ages of the children and the family's residency status. Depending upon these answers, each caller will be referred to the appropriate health plan or mailed an application for this health insurance plan. SD-KHAN will follow-up with that caller again. Why? Because SD-KHAN would like to help with any problems parents experience when they complete the insurance application or any problems they have in hearing back from the insurance company about their acceptance into the insurance program.
Q: Does SD-KHAN help or assist applicants in completing their health insurance application?
A: Yes. SD-KHAN can help or assist clients applying for Healthy Families, Expanded Medi-Cal and Kaiser Permanente Child Health Plan in several ways. We can help you over the telephone. Or, we can meet youin person by appointment. SD-KHAN can also refer you to a Certified Application Assistant who worksworks in your area. All these options for application assistance, are at no charge to the family.
