Current Activities
CDC Developing Center of Excellence on Youth Violence Prevention
The UCSD Academic Center for Excellence on Youth Violence, funded
by the Centers for Disease Control, will foster collaboration between
university researchers and communities to address jointly the problem
of youth violence in the community of City Heights. The Center will
develop and implement community response plans, train health care
professionals, and conduct small pilot projects to evaluate effective
interventions in youth violence.
Center of Excellence in Partnerships for Community Outreach, Research
on Health Disparities and Training (EXPORT).
In September 2002, the University of California, San Diego State
University, the San Diego Council of Community Clinics and the San Diego
County Health and Human Service Agency received a 6 million dollar, five
year grant from the National Institutes of Health's new National
Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities to establish and
run a comprehensive center.
San Diego and Imperial Regional Nutrition Network
San Diego and Imperial Regional Nutrition Network is a grant from the
United States Department of Agriculture to create environments where
food stamp participants and similar low-income Californians are encouraged,
to increase daily consumption of fruits and vegetables and daily physical activity.
Families in Transition: Project FIT
Project FIT is a research study designed to better understand the changes
and adjustments that families make as pregnant teenagers transition to
parenthood. This study focuses on the adjustments that all family members
make as teenagers prepare for the birth of their baby and during the baby's
first year of life. It is expected that the study results will be used to help
teenagers adapt to motherhood and best help their families during this often
stressful time.
UCSD NUTRITION LINK
Nutrition Link is a nutrition education program designed to improve the nutrition and physical
activity knowledge, preferences and behaviors of participating students. A program has a unique
approach to nutrition education through a combination of in-class and web-based lessons.
Pediatricians and Community Collaborating Together
Develop pediatric professionals with greater skills, capacity, and
interest to improve the health and well being of children through
community-based medicine and advocacy.
Kids Health Assurance Network
This network reaches out to families of uninsured
children. Our goal is to provide access to low cost (or no cost) health insurance
children, throughout San Diego county. In addition to UCSD and San Diego County,
SD-KHAN partners with many agencies throughout the county, such as schools and
childcare sites. They help us find families with uninsured children and help
us reach parents so that we can assist them complete successfully applications
Southern California Border HIV/AIDS Project
The purpose of the Southern California Border HIV/AIDS Project, funded
by Health Resource Services Administration, is to develop improved
methods of HIV outreach, testing, and services for high-risk Latino's
living or working in the U.S./Mexico border region. This border health
initiative is a collaborative effort between the San Ysidro Health
Center and the UCSD Center for Community Health, Division of Community
Pediatrics. The Center for Community Health will oversee evaluation
of the project
Exchange and Networking
Through its website, the Center for Community Health will distribute
information about community-based programs and research opportunities.
It will provide a medium to increase communication between UCSD
and community members and decrease time for dissemination of relevant
health information. In addition, the Community Health Forums are
biannual forums for faculty, staff, students to present their current
activities in community-based practice and community based organizations.
