UCSD PARTNERSHIP OF IMMUNIZATION PROVIDERS
STUDY COMPONENTS
Immunization Coverage Audits:
Immunization coverage audits were performed in each partner clinic at the beginning of the project and at 6-month intervals, using a Clinical Assessment Software Application (CASA) program developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, Atlanta).
Missed Opportunity Assessments:
Chart audits were also performed to identify visits in which a child was medically eligible for an immunization but did not receive one. Information from this PIP-created tool, called Missed Opportunity Chart Analysis (MOCHA), allows timely feedback to providers regarding immunization practices.
Work Flow Analysis:
As a complement to the immunization coverage audit, a diagnostic tool is used to conduct a work flow analysis in order to assess office protocols, practice patterns, and provider behaviors that lead to missed immunization opportunities. The methodology is based upon current business strategies for quality improvement and assurance.
Residency Curriculum:
An enhanced immunization curriculum was developed and incorporated into the resident training programs of UCSD Pediatrics, UCSD Family Medicine, Scripps Medical Center Family Medicine, and the U.S. Naval Medical Center Pediatrics.
Community Needs Assessment:
An assessment of the needs of the community surrounding each partner clinic was conducted to include the collection and analysis of existing data, client surveys, key informant interviews/focus groups, and a literature review.
Prenatal Immunization Education Project:
This project focused on providing immunization information to parents before their baby was born, through educational classes and providers of prenatal care.
WIC Assessment & Referral:
Linkage with the local WIC programs for assessing infant and toddler immunization records and making appropriate referrals have been established.
